Blodeuwedd

Blodeuwedd is known in Celtic mythology as a goddess created out of flowers as a wife for the god Lleu.  It is said she was fashioned out of broom flowers, meadowsweet flowers and other spring blooms.

Later, as Blodeuwedd proved to be an unfavorable wife for Lleu, even plotting his death, she was cursed.  Her curse is said to have changed Blodeuwedd from a beautiful woman goddess into an owl. 

She was portrayed as either a fair, beautiful woman adorned with flowers or an owl and represents beauty, if only temporary, and springtime.

Note From Jessica: "In my portrayal of Blodeuwedd, I've placed the yellow broom flowers and delicate meadowsweet flowers in her hair.  I've also created a mask effect around her eyes with these flower petals.  I have featured a prominent owl in the composition in honor of this important part of her myth, and the crescent moon crown represents her association with the night by way of her owl alter ego."
