Bast

Bast (also called Bastet) is known as the cat goddess in Egyptian mythology.  Often depicted with feline companions, or as a woman with the head of a cat or lion, Bast was known as the protector of lower Egypt and later the guardian of the sun god Ra.

In addition to her role as protector and mother figure, Bast was also known as the goddess of ointments and perfumes, and thus had influence over matters of healing and sensuality. 

Note From Jessica:  "I've portrayed Bast in a traditional Egyptian headdress made famous by Queen Nerfertiti, along with an Egyptian gold choker necklace.  Her kohl rimmed eyes gaze upwards toward the heavens, and she wears disk shaped earrings boasting her symbol, the eye of Bast.  While many works of art show Bast as a black cat, I wanted to show both her human-esque and feline aspects with my portrait.  Therefore, I pulled from images of Nefertiti, one of Egypt's most beloved female rulers, for my portrayal of the human-esque form of Bast."
